Under the direction of its founding Artistic Director, Phoebe Voigts, the choir has earned an international reputation for artistic excellence and creative performance practices that are focused on initiatives promoting global understanding. The choir has performed on choral stages in Europe, Asia, the United States, South Africa, and across Canada. The Saskatoon Children’s Choir has three choirs: Preparatory Choir for children aged 7-9, Apprentice Choir for children aged 8-13 and Concert Choir for children aged 10-16. Principal accompanist is Michelle Aalders.

The concert takes place on December 2 and 3, 2011 at 7:30 PM at Third Avenue United Church in Saskatoon, and will feature the angelic voices of 120 choristers, accompanied by pianist Michelle Aalders. The program will feature classical and contemporary choral music of Lang, Stroope, Tiefenbach, Bach, Franck, Canadian folk music, as well as the choir’s stunning renditions of traditional seasonal favourites.

“We are delighted to be joined by so many Saskatoon’s professional musicians once again for this year’s concert,” said Voigts. “Their presence not only enriches the selections on the program, but also creates a wonderful learning experience for our choristers.”

The SCC is a strong presence on the world choral stage, including performances in France, Spain, Austria, the Czech Republic, China, the United States and Canada. This past July, the choir performed six concerts on their tour of South Africa.

Geography Club

What: learning about the earth we live on, starting with basic geographic concepts and maps, then moving on to explore each continent

This club will start likely the third week in September and will again be held at my house, every second Tuesday afternoon or so. This time, each student will do two projects, one before Christmas and one after Christmas. Each student will choose a country, culture or historical event that interests them, and do small projects over the term to make one larger completed project. Each time the club meets, the kids will show the rest of the club their ongoing project and explain what they have discovered. For example, if a student were to research “Great Britain”, he might present one day on geography, one day on popular sports, one day on languages, one day on foods, etc. They can really choose whatever they want – I will draw up a list to fire their imaginations but if they want to choose something completely different that’s cool. So, one project will be completed before Christmas, and one will be completed after Christmas. They can choose to pair up after Christmas for a joint project if they like.

I will help them with some ideas for research material, I have a whole library full of neat things they can use along with other resources. Some of the work will be done at home on their time, but I am scheduling days in between “presentation days” just so the kids have a chance to work on their projects here, and I can help them too, to minimize or eliminate what might need to be done at home.

The projects can take whatever shape the kids want. A presentation folder, a board, a book, a video, whichever they like.

The cost will be $75 this year and we will hopefully have 18 sessions over the year. I am aiming for a four hour afternoon to allow for optional play time – ie kids are welcome at 1, class starts at 1:30, ends at 4, kids are welcome to stay and play til 5.

Photo yearbook will be available to those families who wish to purchase one at the end of the year.

Our tentative first skate date is Sept. 12, 2011. This year we again have Mondays and Wednesdays booked from 12:00 noon till 2:45pm at the Warman Diamond Arena. The rink will be closed on the following Mondays: Oct. 10, & Dec. 26, 2011.

Remember, the hockey is soft puck and everyone on the ice is supposed to be wearing skates (no boots) and a helmet.
