Scottish Country Dancing for Homeschool Families

Scottish Country Dancing is the social dancing of Scotland. It has world-wide acceptance and is a forerunner of North American square dancing. We dance to lively and stimulating music in sets of three to six couples. Costuming is not important although dance slippers make dancing easier. It is not necessary to register as couples and gender is not an issue. While technique is important, we try not to loose sight of the social aspects of the dance. The primary goal is fun and exercise in a social setting.

Because of the social and physical fitness aspects, Scottish Country Dancing has gained popularity with homeschoolers in some parts of North America. I would like to offer it to Saskatoon and area homeschool families.

I am a fully certificated Scottish Country Dance teacher living in Saskatoon. I teach our local club of adults in rotation with three other teachers. For over five years, I have also taught two children’s classes, a parent and child class and a basic adult class through the City Park Community Association. I am dedicated to dancing and teaching and would like to share my love of dance with others.

I can tailor-make classes to suit the needs of the registrants. I am most excited about parent and child classes. It seems the ideal way to introduce SCD to both children and adults and it offers an opportunity for parents and children to share a social activity. Adult or children’s classes can also be planned. I ask for a parent chaperone for children’s classes. Day time classes can be considered. An ideal class size would be sixteen dancers. I am prepared to teach in either Saskatoon or vicinity.
Respectfully submitted, Dr. Claude Hutton, e-mail: cwhutton@shaw.ca
