Kids Trek 2011: Discovering Canada

If you are interested in this journey please let me know. We currently have 15 people interested and would like to see ten to fifteen more (give or take) join us to have a good group to travel with! All ages are welcome. Our journey will be by WestJet and VIA Rail and will be in June/July of this coming summer. Stops will include (at a minimum) Ottawa for Canada Day on Parliament Hill (potential attractions in Ottawa include hiking in the Gatineau Hills, visiting the memorials in downtown Ottawa, swimming at Mooneys Beach on the Rideau Canal, the Museum of Civilisation/Children’s Museum in Hull, as well as free time; Quebec City where we will tour La Citadelle, picnic on the Plains of Abraham, explore old Quebec, and spend a day at Villages Vacances Valcartiers (giant waterpark); Halifax where we will take an overnight trip to the Fortress of Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island, a trip to the Bay of Fundy, board a pirate ship/whale watching, Pier 21, the Titanic memorials, and more. Each stop will include free time to spend with your family should you wish to explore on your own, and all planned activities are optional though we need to know in advance which you will participate in. There is the option of seeing PEI and Newfoundland from Halifax (at extra cost, and dependent on fundraising). We will also include a day’s journey to see Niagara Falls.

We are seeking sponsorship as an educational group and group fundraising is a requirement of participation. Before sponsorship and fundraising, the hard costs are estimated at about $2500 per person (including travel, accommodation and activities, not including food and souvenirs, accounting for some family stays in accommodations). All sponsorship and group fundraising goes towards these hard costs. The travel costs are about $1100 per person, and we want to explore homestays with friends, families, and fellow homeschoolers to reduce our cost for accomodations; this $2500 may be more than required.

This trip is an opportunity for families to explore eastern Canada’s geography and history in person, instead of in the textbooks 🙂 Please email me at clmquintin@gmail.com if you require more details or have any questions. Fundraising has already begun and sponsorship packages will be ready to distribute soon. You can check out updated information at www.kidstrek2011.ca.
